Netizens and local media came out in support of a tweet made by Goa's DGP Jaspal Singh (IPS) regarding road safety.
These days Goa Police is undertaking a road safety drive and imposing a penalty on violators.
With the number of road accidents and fatalities increasing on a daily basis, people and police authorities feel that road safety and responsible driving is the key to avoiding road accidents.
Director General of Police Goa Jaspal Singh (IPS) tweeted, "What bravado lies in not wearing Helmet. Is there any pride in violation of Law? None. Human Skulls are not metallic. Helmets are. So wear them if you love your kinsmen".
So to safeguard their skulls, it is necessary to wear helmets.
A number of news channels took cognisance of this tweet and started flashing it. Netizens also reacted to this in a positive way, supporting this tweet of DGP Singh.
Many people from Goa reacted to the tweet and emphasised that it is necessary to wear a helmet and follow other road safety rules.
A social activist from Vasco Tara Kerkar said, “The majority of fatal accidents involving youths are caused due to overspeeding vehicles. It is definitely our responsibility to obey traffic rules rather than blaming destiny for accidents.”
She further said that it is important to wear safety gear like a helmet without doubt but, at the same time, the traffic police should put an emphasis on imposing fines on overspeeding vehicles on the road.
A youth named Kunal Tulankar said, "I was once saved in a road accident because I was wearing a helmet".
He continued, saying, "My scooter happened to skid on mud in Vasco. I sustained some bruises but my head was saved from the impact. Since then I regularly use a helmet."
Amit Naik, a Goan rapper, said, "It is foolish to wear a helmet to avoid fines. We should, in fact, wear helmets for our own safety.”
He narrated an incident wherein his friend's father died after losing his balance and falling on a rock. He died due to a head injury. Naik said, "If he had been wearing a helmet at the time, he could have survived the accident.”
A social worker from Vasco called Shalaka Kambli also pointed out that the tweet made by the DGP of Goa is correct. She said, "We as citizens should start taking care of ourselves. Road safety should be of utmost importance. Wearing a helmet is a must when you ride a two-wheeler.
Kambli further said that police cannot be present at all junctures. But we as a people should be careful about our safety. Accidents could be avoided if proper safety is taken care of and overspeeding is avoided on roads.
Tejam Wadil, a youth from Sanvordem, said that youth should drive their bikes and cars responsibly. Traffic rules are meant for road safety. If we do not follow road safety measures, then accidents are bound to happen.
