Education holds a pivotal rank among the factors leading towards the advancement of a community. For this, timely reforms and investment to improve the overall quality, and thereby create a learning environment aligned to the modern times, is essential.
As a commitment in this direction, the new campus of the National Institute of Technology Goa (NIT Goa) at Cuncolim, is set to be inaugurated. Heading to Goa on February 6, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will ensure one thing by the end of his trip – he will leave young aspirants at the NIT motivated.
Professor Jaiswal, the Director at NIT Goa concurs and says, “The forthcoming inauguration of the campus by PM Narendra Modi would motivate the students’ morale.”
The director is immensely satisfied that the students have got a campus where they’ll be able nurture their aspirations for a better tomorrow. He says, “NIT Goa will continue to focus on student-centric education and will put forward more efforts with enthusiasm and hope.”
THE JOURNEY TO THE NEW CAMPUS
Established in 2010, by an act of Parliament and declared as an ‘Institute of National Importance’, the National Institute of Technology Goa (NIT Goa) initially started functioning as a transit campus within the premises of Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi, Ponda.
It was only in 2017 that the quest for a permanent campus finally ended when the Goa government transferred a plot of land admeasuring 113 acres in Cuncolim to NIT Goa.
The following year, on December 15, the foundation stone for the institute was laid by Parrikar in the presence of Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar, strengthening the vision and hopes of many.
In the following years, meticulous planning led to building infrastructure that would be conducive to academic and extracurricular pursuits. With a construction cost of Rs 390.83 crore, the campus was built using RCC Precast 3S Technology.
TAILOURED FOR DREAMS
Today, the campus stands tall with a built up area of 70,750 sqm and with a capacity to accommodate about 1,260 students. The new campus, designed to facilitate students on their endeavours, offers various facilities that include tutorial complex, departmental complex, seminar complex, administrative complex, hostels, health centre, staff quarters, amenity centre, sports ground and other utilities.
NIT Goa, at present, has five UG programmes – Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Electronics and Communication Engineering; and Mechanical Engineering. It offers three PG courses, namely, CSE, PEPS and VLSI.
With a student strength of about 900 and faculty strength of 38, the institution has seven academic departments, including Department of Applied Sciences and Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. And, all the Departments offer PhD programmes in ten different disciplines.
The institute is also home to well-equipped laboratories providing hands-on, practical know-how to their students. The Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering laboratories help express novel ideas, understand fundamentals while familiarising students with hardware components and concepts.
A SUCCESS HUB
Apart from the amenities, what truly contributes to the reputation of an educational institute is the quality of education and students’ academic success. Up to year 2023, NIT Goa has conferred PhD degrees to around 53 students. So far, around 50 externally funded R&D projects worth of Rs 33 cr have been completed.
A total of 15 patents have been granted and about five published, and the students along with the faculty have published around 700 research papers in peer-reviewed journals, and 400 papers in national and international conferences.
NIT Goa, presently holds the 90th rank at the NIRF (Engineering), with an average placement of more than 85 per cent. Some of the graduates of NIT Goa have gone on to pursue higher education in reputed international institutes.
MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE
Breaking financial barriers, NIT Goa promises to provide financial assistance where students are encouraged to apply for scholarships.
NIT Goa has 40 per cent seats reserved for students under Home State Quota and 10 per cent seats reserved for the students from Dadra, Nagar Haveli & Daman & Diu. If this isn’t filled, the vacant seats (out of 10 per cent) can be availed by the students under Home State Quota.
