A stroll through the hoary corridors of Chandor
Goa is often celebrated for its stunning beaches, but there’s also an entire different world waiting to be explored beyond the coastline. One of the most enriching things to do in South Goa is to take a heritage walk through the ancient village of Chandor. This quaint village in South Goa is a treasure trove of Indo-Portuguese architecture, ancient ruins and captivating legends. On this Chandor village tour, we explored six historically significant locations, each with a unique story to tell. Our guide for the day, Pankaj Kambli, was knowledgeable, engaging and brought each stop to life with fascinating anecdotes and historical insights.
The trail begins at the beautiful Nossa Senhora de Belem Church, one of the more prominent churches in Goa where the famous Three Kings Feast is celebrated. This centuries-old church is not only an architectural marvel but also holds deep ties to the local community and traditions.
A short walk from the church leads to the Royal House of Bragança Pereira. This stunning 500-year-old Indo-Portuguese mansion allows one to step back in time. With its antique furniture, a private chapel and beautifully preserved interiors, it offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the past.
Not too far, is the Fernandes Heritage Home, also known locally as Voddlem Ghor. This magnificent home, believed to be over 500 years old and predating Portuguese rule, was partly hosted by a member of the Fernandes family. The house features a grand ballroom, French windows, crystal chandeliers and vintage items like pianos and tall vases—all showcasing a blend of Goan and colonial influences.
Next, we visited the Kadamba Dynasty Excavation Site, where remnants of an ancient temple from the Kadamba period have been uncovered. It’s a rare opportunity to witness Goa’s pre-colonial past and understand the roots of its cultural evolution.
We then explored the charming St. Tiago Chapel, home to the legendary Kadamba Queen’s Footprints, believed by some to hold mystical significance. Our final stop was the Cottambi Bridge, that offers a scenic view of the Kushavati River—the perfect way to end a rich and immersive journey.
This trail is more than just a sightseeing tour; it’s a journey through time. From royal houses and ancient ruins to myths of village curses and sacred festivals, the Chandor heritage trail is one of the most unique and authentic cultural experiences in Goa.
