Experience a day in the life of Goan 'fadista' Sonia Shirsat
Goa, a culturally rich land, is well-known for its music scene. The music of Goa is not limited only to the State but has travelled across the globe—thanks to all the amazing artists emerging from this very land.
One such artist who has dedicated her entire life to the field of music is Goa's beloved Sonia Shirsat. Curious about her life and music journey, especially her connection with fado, we set out to experience a day in her life.
While taking a tour of her hometown, Ponda, the renowned Goan fadista revisited her childhood memories with us.
As we made our way through the streets of Ponda, Sonia introduced us to some of her favourite spots growing up, like her school, Sangam Bakery, the Nagueshi Temple and her office, coupled with interesting anecdotes of the past.
Sonia extensively spoke about the journey of fado from Portugal to Goa. She is one of the leading Goan artists to adopt this art form and keep it alive in this State.
For those who are new to this music genre, fado is a soulful semi-classical music genre which originated in Portugal in the 1800s. Later, it made its way to Goa and other parts of the world.
Sonia's passion for fado, mando (Goan folk music genre with Western influence) and Konkani music has placed her on the list of Goa's most notable singers.
Likewise, she has earned the title of "Ambassador of Goan Music to the World" for her consistent efforts in taking the music of Goa to the global stage.
The video presents snippets of a day in Sonia's life and captures candid moments of the singer as she shares the lesser-known side of her personal life.
