When three kings make a royal entry into these three Goan villages
Goa has a long list of feasts and festivals, which are celebrated every year with great pomp and fervour. Its unique cultural heritage inspires people to learn more about it at every step of their journey in the State.
One such festive occasion is all set to be celebrated on January 6 in three different villages of Goa, namely, Chandor, Cansaulim and Verem.
It is the feast which marks the end of the Christmas festivities in Goa -- the feast of the Epiphany, also known as the Three Kings Feast. This religious event symbolises the State's history, faith and community spirit.
In our latest YouTube video, we share exciting glimpses of this eventful day marked by grand pomp and splendour in several parts of Goa. We also talk about the story behind the feast and its significance.
As the name suggests, the Three Kings Feast commemorates the journey of the Three Wise Men, also known as the Magi, who followed the star to Bethlehem to present gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus.
Join us as we witness how every village in Goa celebrates the feast in their own way.
1. Chandor
In the ancient village of Chandor, the story of the Three Kings is brought to life through symbolic enactment. Locals dressed as kings arrive at the Nossa Senhora de Belem Church, in Chandor, riding on horseback. It's a must-see procession.
2. Cansaulim
In Cansaulim, three young boys (representing of the 3 Magi), dressed in royal attire, journey to the Chapel of Our Lady of Remedios on the hill. This is one of the oldest celebrations, done the traditional way. Even though the journey to the chapel on the hill is a long one, devotees can be seen walking up the hill, seeking blessings and answers to their prayers.
This ceremony involves interesting traditions such as placing the kings' crowns on the heads of devotees as a gesture of blessings and more!
One shouldn't miss visiting Cansaulim on the feast day to experience the festival at its best.
3. Verem
Reis Magos, in Bardez, gets its name from the Three Wise Men of the Bible, and one can catch glimpses of the festivities in this village. On the feast day, a solemn high mass is held, followed by a grand procession. Local youth from the village take on the roles of the Three Wise Men, leading the celebration with great enthusiasm.
