FC Goa score dominant 2-0 win over Mohammedan SC

The game was dominated by FC Goa from the first whistle, with Iker Guarrotxena emerging as the hero; the team is now gearing up to take on ISL Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant on March 8

In a completely one-side affair, a dominant FC Goa defeated Mohammedan SC 2-0 in their second-last game of the Indian Super League at Fatorda Stadium in South Goa on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

This dominant win not only solidified their position as one of the top contenders but also showcased their preparation for the upcoming semi-finals in the Indian Super League (ISL).

FC Goa started on an offensive note, but had to wait till the 40th minute for Iker Guarrotxena’s brilliance for the team's first goal, which was a well-executed header from a corner.

With his clinical performance, Guarrotxena took his season's tally to eight goals, a goal behind teammate Armando Sadiku, who had scoring chances in today's game but he ran out of luck.

Goa's second goal came in the 86th minute and yet again it was Guarrotxena's header that made the difference, but it was considered as an own goal as the ball hit the woodwork and then the goalkeeper Padam Chettri before entering the Mohammedan goal.

Beyond Guarrotxena’s brilliance, it was FC Goa’s overall attacking intent that impressed. The team dominated possession, built from the back, and created numerous opportunities throughout the match.

Rowllin Borges, Armando Sadiku, and Boris Singh were consistently involved in offensive moves, but it was their inability to capitalise on some of their chances that prevented Goa from putting the game beyond Mohammedan SC much earlier.

In the second half, Goa did not let up, continuing to push for goals. Armando Sadiku’s header was parried away, while a chance for Nim Dorjee went just wide.

Despite this, it was clear that FC Goa’s superior quality and depth in their squad were too much for Mohammedan to handle.

The team’s fluidity in attack, paired with their disciplined defence, made it a comfortable evening for them, though they could have increased their margin of victory.

With a playoff spot secured, FC Goa made several substitutions, offering playing time to younger and fringe players. The evening saw new faces like goalkeeper Lara Sharma figuring in the first eleven. Hrithik Tiwari was rested for today's game.

Seriton Fernandes, who was rested for the most part of ISL, also figured in the first eleven. Nim Dorjee Tamang and Sanatomba Singh also got game practice and they both impressed. Additionally, towards the end, Prachit Gaonkar too got some playing time and he showed what he could do with the ball.

However, the absence of a sizable crowd at the Fatorda Stadium could not go unnoticed. It appeared the Carnival celebrations and the Goa's secure semi-final qualification may have played a part in this.

Looking ahead, this game offered a clear statement that FC Goa, while securing their semi-final berth, are not taking their foot off the gas. They are determined to finish the league stage on a high, perfecting their performances in preparation for the crucial knockout stages.

They demonstrated their readiness and squad depth, which could prove crucial in the pressure-cooker environment of the semi-finals. Goa will hope to carry this momentum forward and make a serious push for the title.

With this victory, FC Goa increased their points tally to 48 from 23 games. Their next match against ISL Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant on March 8 promises to be a crucial encounter, essentially serving as a final warm-up before the knockout stages.

With players like Guarrotxena and Borja Herrera leading from the front and fresh talent stepping up, FC Goa looks well-equipped to take on Mohun Bagan whom they defeated at home 2-1.

The path to the semi-finals is clear—now it’s all about finishing strong and navigating the final stretch with confidence.
