As the Indian Super League (ISL) peaks, all eyes are set on FC Goa’s clash against Mumbai City FC on Wednesday, February 12, in an away encounter which will bring out the true character of the team under the leadership of coach Manolo Marquez.

After Mumbai City, FC Goa’s upcoming fixtures, including a series of challenging games against Kerala Blasters, Punjab FC, and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, are set to test the team's resolve further.

In a pre-match press conference in Goa before leaving for Mumbai, Marquez, emphasised the unpredictability of the league, stating, "We can beat every team if we have one good day, but if we don’t, we can lose. This is the reality of the competition."

Reflecting on the team's progress compared to the previous season, Marquez noted a marked difference in character. Last season, FC Goa struggled to hold on to leads, conceding late goals that cost them valuable points.

However, this year’s squad has shown better consistency with a stronger mental resolve in high-pressure moments, he said.

“We lost several games last season in just 10 minutes, conceding two or three goals. This year, we’ve been more solid, and the character in the team has improved,” Marquez said, underscoring the collective effort and attitude of the squad.

"This team is stronger in this aspect. We’re fighting until the end, whether we win or lose, and that’s the mentality I want from them."

One of the most exciting aspects of this season for FC Goa has been the rise of their young talents, with players like Hrithik Tiwari and Brison Fernandes making significant contributions. Tiwari, once the third-choice goalkeeper last season, has stepped up this year with impressive performances, earning praise from Marquez for his maturity and character.

“He has shown great personality, especially after a tough performance in one match where he bounced back and played a fantastic game,” said Marquez of Tiwari’s resilience. “He is a very good goalkeeper for the future, and we are confident he will continue to grow.”

Brison Fernandes, a local talent from Goa, has been another standout player. Marquez, who has always believed in the potential of young players, pointed out Fernandes’ development both on and off the pitch.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Marquez remains optimistic, despite the challenges that lie ahead. He made it clear that FC Goa's goal is to fight for every point, with a focus on achieving a top-four finish to secure a spot in the playoffs.

We are competitive, and even when we play well or poorly, we fight for every point. We will try to win the shield, but if that's not possible, we will aim for second, or at least third place

“We are competitive, and even when we play well or poorly, we fight for every point. We will try to win the shield, but if that's not possible, we will aim for second, or at least third place,” he affirmed.

However, Marquez was quick to remind everyone that the season is far from over. "If we win the next three games, we will be in a good position, but we can’t focus on what’s ahead without taking it one game at a time,” he added.

As FC Goa gears up for their remaining fixtures, one thing is certain: they will continue to fight until the very end, with their eyes set on securing a place in the playoffs and perhaps, even further glory.

The season is still in full swing, and from here on FC Goa cannot slip if they have to get closer to Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who are sitting pretty at the top.
