Have you ever wondered what it would be like to step back in time and stay in a traditional Goan heritage house?
The allure of Goa's colonial-era homes, with their charm and elegance, is undeniable. And, that dream can become a reality at Surya Kiran Heritage Hotel.
Nestled in the picturesque neighbourhood of Campal, Panjim, Surya Kiran offers a rare glimpse into a bygone era while providing all the modern comforts for a truly unforgettable stay.
More than just a place to rest, it’s an immersive experience that invites you to explore the rich history and culture of Goa.
As the owner, I’ve always believed that a boutique stay should be more than just a place to sleep — it should transport you to another time, another world.

This boutique hotel offers much more than a mere stay experience, and that is exactly what the owner wanted.
“As the owner, I’ve always believed that a boutique stay should be more than just a place to sleep — it should transport you to another time, another world,” says Pritam Bijlani, the proud owner of Surya Kiran.
“That’s why I’ve designed each room with Goa’s Portuguese heritage in mind, ensuring the perfect balance between history and comfort,” he shares.
Built during the colonial era, the structure has been lovingly restored to preserve its old-world charm.
From antique furnishings to intricate architecture, every inch of the property is a tribute to Goa’s past, enhanced with thoughtful modern touches that guarantee comfort without sacrificing its timeless appeal.
RICH TAPESTRY OF GOA’S PAST
The beauty of Surya Kiran lies not only in its architecture, but also in the vibrant community surrounding the hotel.
The heritage neighbourhood of Campal was once home to bureaucrats and respected doctors during the Portuguese era, many of who passed down their homes through generations.
This rich tapestry of history and tradition gives Campal its unique, tranquil energy.
The beauty of Surya Kiran lies not only in its architecture, but also in the vibrant community surrounding the hotel.
The bright yellow colour on the external walls of Surya Kiran is a perfect example of where Portuguese colonial grandeur meets the earthy, vibrant soul of Goa’s indigenous styles.
The building itself feels like a living, breathing piece of history, with wide verandahs, arched windows, and colourful ceramic tiles that are a signature style of the Portuguese influence in Goa.
SENSORY EXPERIENCE AT SURYA KIRAN
Upon entering Surya Kiran, you’ll immediately notice the high ceilings and spacious rooms, which evoke the grandeur of colonial homes.
“We’ve designed larger bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes to offer a luxurious experience while still maintaining the character of the original space,” says Pritam as he shared details of some of the newer elements in the rooms.
The paintings on the walls — local Goan art as well as those created by students from an art institute in Belgaum, Karnataka — depict scenes from Goa’s Portuguese past, blending both colonial and indigenous traditions.
One of the interesting features of Surya Kiran is its inner courtyard garden. “This garden reflects the close connection Goans have with nature,” explains Pritam.
At the heart of the garden stands an old chikoo tree, possibly as ancient as the house itself, offering both, shade and a sense of timelessness. Surrounding it are lush tropical plants that fill the air with their vibrant colours and fragrance.

SERENITY IN THE HEART OF GOA
The garden is not only a visual delight, but also a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Nestled within it is a tranquil koi pond, where colourful fish glide through the water, adding a serene rhythm to the atmosphere.
“The gentle sound of flowing water and the peaceful koi make it the perfect spot to reflect or unwind after a busy day,” says Pritam.
In addition to the koi pond, Surya Kiran features a five-senses Zen garden, designed to engage all your senses. The textured stones beneath your feet, the fragrance of the plants, the sound of the water, the vibrant koi, and the rustle of the leaves in the breeze come together to create a calming sensory experience.
This garden has become a favourite spot for guests, offering a tranquil space to relax, meditate, or simply appreciate the beauty of Goa’s natural environment.
