Not all of us are standing still, simply watching the environment degrade around us. Some are actually making a difference. Here’s one brand inspiring not just locals, but also tourists to see the beauty of repurposing.
Driven by the philosophy ‘one man's trash is another man's treasure’, Once Upon A Time (O.U.A.T), a Goa-based upcycling brand is transforming waste that would otherwise end up in landfills into beautiful, functional products.
Founded by Atika Gaur, O.U.A.T started in January 2022 and operates in a small creative space in Kundaim, North Goa. What began as a passion project with handmade candles eventually evolved into a full-fledged initiative to transform discarded glass bottles into beautiful, functional items.
The name, in fact, reflects their core philosophy of giving a new life to materials that were once considered waste. “Living in Goa, I was struck by the overwhelming amount of glass waste around me. It sparked the idea of creating something meaningful from what would otherwise be discarded,” says Atika about how the idea took root.
To date, the brand has upcycled over 4,000 bottles, contributing to a cleaner, greener world.
The brand primarily works with discarded wine, beer and gin bottles, collecting them from local pubs and restaurants across Goa.
“Each bottle is carefully washed and cut into different sizes and shapes, and then, the edges are sanded using a simple, energy-efficient machine,” Gaur explains.
Every piece is then handcrafted into something new and useful. From homeware like glasses, sippers, sprouters, vases, storage jars and candles to lighting and decor, their collection also includes jewellery, repurposing glass into wearable art.
As a leading tourist destination, Atika finds Goa has the unique opportunity to set an example for other states by integrating eco-friendly practices into its tourism experience, “Our creations carry the story and spirit of Goa — making them a perfect way to take a piece of the State home with you,” says Atika.
By supporting locally made, sustainable brands like O.U.A.T, those travelling to Goa not only choose meaningful souvenirs, but also help reduce waste and support local artisans.
O.U.A.T’s products are found in curated stores across Goa, such as O.M.O Store, GoodLife Lifestyle Store, Global to Local (all in Panjim) and Ethico Zero Waste Store (in Siolim).
“We’re also looking to expand into hotel shops, airport outlets, and other platforms with the support of the tourism department,” says Atika adding that it will contribute to the culture of mindful and sustainable tourism.
As a strong believer that every small action eventually adds up, Atika wants everyone to start simple with some conscious choices.
“Whether it's not littering, carrying reusable essentials and cutting down single-use plastics or supporting local businesses and shopping from sustainable brands, these small actions, when done collectively, can lead to meaningful changes,” she says.
So, the next time you find yourself in Goa, travel mindfully and explore brands, like O.U.A.T, that aren’t just helping preserve the natural beauty of the land, but also contributing to a larger movement towards sustainability.
