The recently concluded second edition of the popular community festival Festa do Povo in Panjim was graced by the presence of thousands. The festival truly embraced the philosophy “of the people, by the people and for the people".
Festa do Povo, held over December 14 and 15, is synonymous with Goan culture, environment, heritage and camaraderie.
CULTURAL FEAST
The festival that took place over two days was a fascinating amalgamation of various cultural features of Goa. Both days of Festa do Povo saw large crowds clamouring to participate in the festivities that so epitomised Goan culture.
Day one featured traditional Shigmo dances, storytelling on mythical rakhondars (protectors) and the seven sisters, and craft activities for children by Bookworm, a local community bookstore.
SONG AND DANCE DELIGHTS
There were musical and dance representations of Goa's culture with performances that included the Kaustubha Ballet, the dekhni dance and music by Sound of Music. A highlight of the event was Goan fado singer Sonia Shirsat and the Stuti Choir delivering a memorable musical collaboration.
The performances were held simultaneously over two stages, adding a spirit of dynamism while attendees swayed to the beat of the superb musical presentations.
COMMUNITY-DRIVEN
The people of Panjim, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) and Imagine Panaji came together to organise the event. The area along the mangrove-lined pedestrian spine at Patto Plaza near the Spaces building was claimed to host the festival.
Residents from various city wards, especially those from heritage homes and blocks, actively participated in planning the festival.
CULINARY FIESTA
Goan-Portuguese, Hindu Saraswat and Muslim cuisine, prepared by local home chefs, local residents and culinary experts from across Goa, were showcased at Festa do Povo.
International chefs and renowned restaurants also chipped in, contributing to the diverse gastronomic spread that celebrated Goa’s culinary heritage. Local beverages were given the spotlight thanks to a dedicated feni bar and beverage counter. This move most definitely enhanced the festive mood.
FUN FOR ALL AGES
Children and adults attending the festival could also play and revel in the newly constructed skating rink and test their skills at an artificial rock climbing wall, which was erected at the venue.
An exceptional addition was the intimate storytelling sessions amidst the picturesque mangroves of Patto Plaza.
A VISUAL FEAST
One of the main attractions of the festival was an art exhibition showcasing the works of 20 artists, including experienced professionals and aspiring art students. The exhibition integrated their creations beautifully to honour Goa’s artistic spirit.
An exceptional addition was the intimate storytelling sessions amidst the picturesque mangroves of Patto Plaza, which helped bring Goa’s rich folklore to life.
Festa do Povo did indeed live up to its name and philosophy, satisfying one and all while presenting Goan culture in all its glory.
