Aren’t we always seeking more from our travels? Today, exploring new places isn’t just about visiting the attractions, but engaging in activities that truly connect with us. Like perhaps pottery, a hands-on activity, where we create pieces that add something more to our travel experience.
If you’re on a lookout for a place in Goa that lets you immerse yourself in the art of pottery, Luneclay Ceramic Studio & Art School in Anjuna, North Goa, could be perfect for you. Started five years ago by Shaili Sutaria, a self-taught artist, Luneclay is a beginner-friendly space designed for exploration and self-expression.
“We offer workshops and classes for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced potters,” says Shaili who transitioned from a 15-year career in filmmaking to ceramics. Seeking a slower, nature-driven life, Shaili moved to Goa in 2015 and founded the studio in 2020.
Situated at ‘Dot in the Park’ in Anjuna, Luneclay gets its name from the crescent moon that symbolises growth, transformation and new beginnings. The corner is more than just a pottery studio, it is a creative sanctuary.
“The studio fosters a warm, non-judgemental environment, encouraging creativity and connection with nature,” Shaili says.
Apart from ceramics, the studio embraces natural materials like wood, rope and seashells, making it a unique space for artistic exploration. While working in the studio you can view the expanse of the park or even swing under a banyan tree.
Nature, particularly the ocean and forests, also sparks Shaili’s own work. She specialises in sculptures of sea creatures, coral, fungi, organic landscapes and functional pottery pieces for homes and restaurants.
“My passion for clay grew from an intuitive connection with the medium and a desire to create with my hands,” she says.
To Shaili, pottery teaches patience, mindfulness and the art of letting go. “Working with clay is both grounding and meditative, offering a deep sense of connection with nature and oneself,” she says, emphasising learning through play and intuition.
At the studio, clay is carefully shaped, slowly dried to remove moisture, bisque-fired for strength and glazed for texture and colour. The wares are gas-fired at high temperatures to achieve a durable, refined finish with unique surface effects.
Depending on a participant's time and availability, courses at Luneclay are structured into one-day sessions, weekly and monthly classes for adults and children, along with an immersive artist residency, making it accessible to all.
“Private and group sessions are available for all ages and skill levels. The variety of workshops are available on our WhatsApp profile. Interested participants can contact the studio directly via WhatsApp to make reservations,” Shaili informs.
The studio also collaborates with local and international artists, hosting workshops, masterclasses and creative residencies.
“We also host anniversaries and birthday parties to make personal occasions more self–explanatory, memorable and invigorating,” the founder says, adding, “The studio welcomes artists seeking inspiration and a tranquil space to work.”
So, if you want to make something with your own hands, a little priceless souvenir that will forever remind you of the time well spent in Goa, book an adventure at Luneclay.
