The exquisite, ethereal orchid is indeed Mother Nature’s masterpiece as they say. This beautiful and delicate flower is one of the most desired flowers in the world. That orchids are the most sought-after flowers is proven by their use in all sorts of celebrations and events.

Be it weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries and other grand decorations, orchids become the principal flower to add beauty to the venue.

Owing to the popularity and huge demand for this flower in the market, one Goan from Sanguem came forward and dared to invest his time, money and energy in growing orchids on his farm and return earning handsomely.

This success story that Gomantak Times has brought before you is of Satish Gaonkar, a resident of Tudav (Netravali) in Sanguem taluka. He has his own orchid plantation in the village of Nunem, which he started six years ago.

Gaonkar has utilised his 3000 square metres of land to grow two varieties of orchids. Understanding the huge demand for white and dark pink orchids, Gaonkar has been cultivating orchids on his farm in Nunem along commercial lines for the last six years.

A farmer by profession, Satish says that these orchids grow in all seasons and therefore he can supply these flowers to his customers throughout the year.

He also uses water dripping and water sprinkling on these plants to keep them cool during the summer season. To be specific, in the months of March, April and May, water sprinkling is done regularly to maintain humidity and coolness.

The method used to plant orchids is as follows: the first step is to make a bed-shaped structure of wood and then coconut husk is kept over the bed. Further, the plant sapling is planted on it.  After a few days, the plant begins to grow, sprouting small flowers. Then the grading is done as A, B and so on.

Gaonkar said that it is necessary to be self-sufficient. He earns a profit of over Rs 50 thousand to Rs1 lakh. For a huge profit, one needs to work hard and make the necessary investments.

Goankar advised Goan youth that taking up agriculture was a far better option than the usual job market. Be it the traditional or mechanical form, agriculture has a huge scope today.

The youth should understand that agriculture is our backbone. They should give it a try and become self-employed.
