A toilet block in the Mormugao municipal market was converted into a meat shop way back in 2006, leaving the market without a toilet facility. Goa First NGO has written a complaint letter to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking rectification of the matter.

There was a toilet block till 2005 in Mormugao municipal market beside Dattratreya Marg. Later in 2006, these toilets blocks were suddenly converted into a meat shop. Taking cognisance of this matter, Goa First convenor Parshuram Sonurlekar made a complaint to the Mormugao Municipality and the director of Municipal Administration, claiming that this meat shop is illegal. He demanded that the municipality set up toilets for men and women in the same location.

Surprisingly, even after three weeks, Mormugao Municipality has not taken cognisance of this illegality. Sonurlekar has now filed a complaint with the state urban secretary and the Prime Minister's Office in Delhi, seeking justice in this matter.

Goa First convenor Parashuram Sonurlekar has also complained to the chief officer of MMC about the illegal conversion of the toilet in the Mormugao municipal market into a meat shop in 2006.

Parashuram Sonurlekar has informed us that despite it being three weeks since Goa First filed a complaint, Mormugao Municipality has not taken any action against the meat shop set up in place of the toilet. Sonurlekar has alleged that the municipal officials are involved in corruption as the municipality is not taking action against the meat shop on purpose. The municipality has not even replied to queries put forth by Goa First.

Sensing the lack of willingness of the MMC to act against this illegality, Goa First has finally filed a complaint against the Mormugao Municipality with the state urban secretary and the Prime Minister's Office. Goa First convener Parashuram Sonurlekar has said that he is hopeful that appropriate action will be taken by the Prime Minister’s Office in this matter.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Chief Officer of Mormugao Municipal Council Jayant Tari said that the municipality had received a complaint a few days back. MMC administrative staff are investigating the matter. He said he too will look into the matter and see what the issue is and what is to be done about it.
