Most of us would agree that the world is teetering towards environmental collapse, but many choose to look the other way. That's largely due to greed, ambition and a relentless push for progress that comes at the cost of the planet.

At a time when humanity is in the throes of moral and ecological turmoil, the International Exhibition of the Eucharistic Miracles of the World by Blessed Carlo Acutis, being held at the St Sebastian Church in Aquem, South Goa, till May 4, reminds us of the need to pause and pay attention to what truly matters.

Blessed Carlo Acutis needs no introduction, at least for those in the Catholic faith. Carlo was to be declared the first millennial saint by Pope Francis, but destiny had other plans.

The death of the pope means his canonisation, which was scheduled for April 27, 2025, will have to wait till a new pontiff is elected.

Blessed Carlo, who passed away when he was just 15, is credited with the work of creating a website, documenting Eucharistic miracles worldwide. The exhibition featuring these miracles was originally conceived by this Italian teenager who used his passion for computers to spread the faith.

By revealing these miracles, Blessed Carlo, who was deeply rooted in his faith, showed clarity of purpose. He saw technology not as a trap, but as a tool, one that could be used for the greater good of humanity.

In today's times, the clarity with which this young teenager lived his short life, is missing. The mobile and laptop screens of our youngsters glow endlessly without meaning and purpose. Social media, today, has become a performance arena, used more to settle scores and foster trouble.

Many of the young, who should be acting wise and careful with technology to shape a compassionate future have been enslaved by its tempting distractions and have become digital dependents. They are disconnected from the natural world.

When we speak of a compassionate future, it means to forge ahead with a new purpose for creating a better Earth rooted in care, humility and awareness.

You don't have to be a climate activist to achieve this goal. In fact, Blessed Carlo wasn't a climate activist and did not sit on international panels.

What he did, instead, was document Eucharistic miracles to awaken all those who were distracted. His quiet devotion is a reminder and shines light on urgent realities like the deepening climate crisis.

It is time for us to reconnect, not just with faith, but with the Earth, and the real tangible miracles that sustain life every day – like air, water, trees and soil – which we have taken for granted.

In a world that has lost its way, Blessed Carlo’s life is a gentle reminder for a change of direction. Our planet is breaking under the weight of overconsumption. Natural disasters, once rare, are now terrifyingly frequent.

Scientists warn us of irreversible damage. And, yet, many are still chasing more, wanting faster, bigger and newer.

Our planet is breaking under the weight of overconsumption. Natural disasters, once rare, are now terrifyingly frequent.

What we need now is a miracle, not the one that drops from the sky, but that which has to come from within us. If we want to see a miracle, there will have to be a collective awakening, in choosing less over more, in embracing sustainability not as sacrifice, but as salvation.

The world doesn’t need more apps, it needs a generation that will pause and go down on its knees to pray for divine wisdom. Like Blessed Carlo, our youngsters will need to be more humble and move with humility.

We all know within ourselves that the world needs a miracle, but maybe it's already here.
