This sprawling Portuguese-style heritage mansion is more than just a place to stay — it's a window into Goa's rich cultural past. With towering doors, soaring ceilings and lush views of paddy fields, the Figueiredo House is as majestic as it is historic.

Every corner tells a story, echoing the opulence of a time when Goa was a flourishing trading hub, during the 17th and 18th centuries.

In conversation with Pedro Figueiredo, the 19th-generation custodian of the estate, we learn that the property is divided into two parts — The Old House and The New House.

“The Old House was built in 1590 by a Hindu Brahmin family escaping the bubonic plague,” he shares. “After converting to Christianity, the family took the surname Figueiredo, and the house has carried that legacy ever since.”

Restored lovingly in 2016, the Old House now operates as a heritage homestay, featuring nine elegantly-designed rooms — each named after remarkable women from the family who safeguarded the estate post-Goa’s liberation in 1961.

Despite its age, the home offers modern comforts, like en suite bathrooms and free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

Pedro, who was raised in Portugal, has returned to Goa to take charge of the estate, and personally hosts guests, offering them rich insights into the family’s storied past. His passion ensures every guest walks away with more than just a stay — they get a slice of Goan history.

A part of the mansion is also open to visitors as a private museum. For just Rs 300, you can take a guided tour through its stunning banquet hall, dining area and music room.

Expect to be dazzled by Belgian crystal chandeliers, 24-carat gold dinnerware, oyster shell windows, Burmese teak flooring, and intricately carved rosewood furniture.

Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone looking to do something different in Goa, a stay or visit to Figueiredo House is a must. It’s more than a destination — it’s a timeless experience.
