If you’re in Panjim for Carnival, you have made the right choice, if you’re not, there’s still time to make it.
It's that time of the year when the capital city comes alive in every corner. Carnival in Panjim isn’t just about the main float parade (on March 1, this year), but the revelry spreads across the streets, squares, and the nearby beach at Miramar.
The countdown to the celebrations has begun, and if you don't want to miss the fun, follow this guide from Gomantak Times Digital, and you will be good to go.
1. THE GRAND KING MOMO PARADE
The Carnival float parade is the highlight of the celebration. It begins with the spectacular entry of King Momo and his entourage, and winds its way from the Santa Monica jetty to Campal.
The revelry begins at 4 pm when King Momo sets the tone for the celebrations by reading his decree of merriment. It’s summer, so if you are out there as a spectator, don’t forget to wear a hat. It will protect you from the hot sun.
The float parade goes on till dusk, when the revellers spread out to the various bars and eateries in the city.
2. SAMBA SQUARE (Garcia de Orta, Panjim)
No sooner the Panjim float parade ends, the celebrations peak at the Samba Square, near the Garcia de Orta garden, the central part of the city.
Here, the music, the food and the revellery keep the Carnival spirit alive till late into the night. The Samba Square celebrations will begin on March 1 and go on till March 4, starting daily at 5.30 pm.
On Carnival days, the square transforms into the ultimate party hub where live bands and DJs spin out popular tunes. With food stalls offering mouthwatering treats, Samba Square is where Carnival evenings come alive.
The highlight is the Red and Black Dance on the final day, March 4. Revellers in combinations of red and black (a must for entry) attire, party late into the night. This year, popular bands like Trilogy and Blue Waves will perform.
3. FONTAINHAS: THE LATIN QUARTER
The charming Latin Quarter of Fontainhas is a picturesque area to explore during Carnival. This neighbourhood, with its narrow streets and colourful Portuguese-style houses, invites people all through the year.
However, during Carnival, the atmosphere at Fontainhas is festive. You can step in for a good time at local joints like Joseph Bar, Goldspot, Miskhi, Soho and Bar51, where you can savour drinks and cocktails, enjoy music, and dive into the Carnival spirit.
4. MIRAMAR BEACH
After the float parade, head to Miramar Beach, if you want to get away from the noise. You can stop by at the many cafes that dot Miramar such as the Blue Brick Wall and the Perfect Cup.
And, if you wish to pep up your evening with some Goan flavour, don’t miss D’Silva’s, a few metres from Miramar Circle. Here, you can relish some of the choicest Goan offerings, while at the same time soaking in the summer sea breeze.
After having your Goan fill at D’Silva’s, head to Miramar Beach for a relaxing stroll, and later, head to the Miramar Circle to admire the Carnival decorations.
5. FLOATING CASINOS
The floating casinos on River Mandovi host themed nights during Carnival with live music and entertainment that extend deep into the night.
If you're looking for an upscale, fun-filled Carnival night, there is nothing better than these casinos.
