It's not everyday that one gets to watch a Kathak performance by an award winning dancer, that too, in Goa. But, that's exactly what a fortunate few were witness to earlier this week.

Dressed in a bright yellow and red ghagra choli, Nidhi Prabhu enthralled the audience with her stunning Kathak performance, at the 6th edition of 'Raga Rasa', held at Silva Heritage, Benaulim, in South Goa recently.

Her elegance, grace, and confidence in Indian classical dance form stem from years of dedicated practice and hard work, and have brought her national and international accolades and awards, allowing her to carve a niche for herself in the realm of dance.

In a ground-breaking moment, she even became the first Kathak dancer to perform at the Supreme Court of India.

In a chat with Gomantak Times Digital, Nidhi spoke about her roots in Goa, her time in the State, and how she plans to explore the place. Excerpts from the interview:

FINESSE: Her performance was a true reflection of years of dedication and mastery in the art form.

Q. What was it like to perform in Goa?

I was absolutely thrilled to perform 'Katha-Kathak' at two incredible venues – Silva Heritage and Arambolians. What makes this even more special is that both these spaces have never hosted a Kathak performance before.

I felt truly honoured to introduce the beauty and elegance of Kathak to these audiences for the first time, and I was excited to see them experience the magic of this traditional Indian dance form.

Q. Kathak is known for its art of storytelling through expression and dance movements. In Goa, where the cultural settings are very different, how do you adapt your performances?

I’m well aware that the audience in Goa is diverse, and that's what makes it exciting. I was thrilled to take on the challenge of presenting the beauty of Kathak in a way that resonates with everyone.

Keeping this in mind, I curated a special performance that showcases different facets of this classical dance form, and I also weaved in interactive elements to engage the audience.

In a groundbreaking moment, she even became the first Kathak dancer to perform at the Supreme Court of India.

You have performed all over the country. What's it like performing in Goa compared to other parts of India?

Goa is my native place, and so I am emotionally attached to it. It is unique, with a laid-back energy, yet deeply appreciative of the arts. Performing here is like having a dialogue with the audience, where tradition meets the free-spirited vibe of the land.

You have performed in Goa in the past; tell us about your time here.

Every performance in Goa has been special, but what stands out is the warmth of the audience and the beautiful settings that make the experience even more magical.

When I visit Goa, I love to hang out on the serene beaches, the charming old Portuguese Quarter, and of course, Goa’s vibrant food culture. I enjoy Goan food a lot, so I love to visit local eateries here.

There’s always something new to explore! I am really proud that I belong to such a beautiful place.

Do you have any future plans to engage with Goa’s arts community beyond this performance, like collaborating with local artistes or conducting workshops?

I would love to! Goa has a rich, artistic culture, and collaborating with local artistes or conducting workshops would be a wonderful way to exchange ideas and celebrate the beauty of dance together.

I want to explore Goa in a different artistic way as much as I can.
