One of the first monsoon festivals that ushers in the rainy season in Goa is Sao Joao. Celebrated on June 24, it marks the feast of St John the Baptist. On this day, locals adorn their heads with kopels (floral headgear), jump into wells and partake in the lively festivities, replete with music, dance and community spirit.
“Think of it as Goa’s way of welcoming the monsoons with song, dance, tradition, and a splash — literally!” says Soul Travelling, a local tour operator, all set to offer an authentic, local experience of the festival for those eager to join in the celebrations.
WHY THIS EXPERIENCE STANDS OUT
Steering away from the commercial Sao Joao parties, the Soul Travelling experience is taking place in the scenic village of Aldona, where the festival is not a spectacle, but rather, a heartfelt community affair.
With welcoming locals and beautiful surroundings, it offers the authentic, immersive experience that Soul Travelling loves to curate.
“From understanding the roots of the tradition to participating in the festivities, wearing your own kopel, singing with villagers, and participating in community festivities, this is a deeper and truly authentic side of Sao Joao that a lucky few get to behold,” says Arishma Gomes, Marketing Associate at Soul Travelling.
Here’s a chance to not just watch the festivities, but immerse in them. The trail begins with a storytelling session about the origins of Sao Joao, followed by a walk through lush lanes to the hub of the festivities, meeting locals and joining them in their celebrations.
FEEL THE PULSE OF GOA
One of the most anticipated trails each year, the Sao Joao trail is always unique because the festive spirit is so infectious and spontaneous every time.
“For many of our guests, it’s their first time experiencing the ‘real’ Goa beyond the beaches, and seeing them connect with the community and culture is the best reward,” says Pankaj Kamble, who guides this trail.
“I hope people walk away with a heart full of memories, a song or two stuck in their heads, and a deeper understanding of Goa’s vibrant traditions,” he adds.
Apart from being part of the traditional festive songs, dancing, kopel-making, and the iconic well-jumping ritual (optional), there’ll also be delicious festive specials, like patoleo (rice parcels with jaggery and coconut), homemade sweets, and refreshing drinks that are integral to the celebrations.
“Guests make their own kopel, participate in traditional games, indulge in authentic Goan snacks, and of course, jump in the water if they’re up for it,” shares Arishma.
"As an alternative to jumping in the well, there will also be a private pool that you can opt for. Expect music, laughter, and a whole lot of heartfelt Goan hospitality,” she adds.
MAKE THE MOST OF THE TRAIL
Everyone is welcome to join the celebrations. The trail is suitable for people of all ages, from children to the elderly. Participants are advised to wear festive, tropical-print attire. It’s also recommended to bring a change of clothes, a towel, and comfortable shoes, because getting wet during the festivities is expected.
The Soul Travelling team will be present throughout the trail to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all. For safety reasons, the traditional well-jumping is recreated in a supervised pool setup instead of an actual well.
Also, transport is not included, and participants are responsible for arranging their own travel to the meeting point.
So, come join in this unforgettable monsoon experience. Guests are encouraged to capture keepsake moments throughout the celebrations with photos and videos, as tradition, joy, and adventure comes alive.
